Squeeze the Planet: into Silver Lake Saturday Errands

If your Saturday To Do List is all the usual errands: Put the Planet first on the List --to do something that will make a difference.

--We can't wait --any more, for dithering politicians to 'decide' which way the 'wind' is blowing --to get out of their stupor --to stop fiddling with the lobbyists of the Oval Office occupant's pals. --While he panders to them --uses the Nation's parks, pristine land and resources as His piggy pot --the oily boys network jacks up the price of oil and gasoline, blows the tops off mountains, puts miners lives in jeopardy for coal: Leave the whole crowd, and their front man, the President of Vice, in their soot. WE have to Go Around them --look to ourselves to stop the pollution, destruction of planet and species.

Step It Up Saturday November 3, 2007
All over the US people in tiny communities, large cities, teens to eldsters are thinking up ways to change the wasteful way of life to save the planet. Across the political spectrum, across the country: events will happen that you can Step Up and join.

It started: with one man and six volunteers, students, who put up a website. It grew: 1,400 events in one day. Saturday November 3: second chance to participate --to put your body where your thoughts are.

"Step It Up" --is a message to members of Congress --to Step UP cutting carbon emissions. Thousands sent messages to their representatives. Without Pressure from us, the voters --the donors --the usually 'quiet' ones, Congress won't MOVE.

In Silver Lake this past summer: temperature climbed to 106 --then hit 109 --soared to 112 degrees, broke 177-year record --did you forget? How many More days like that do you want? --Sitting, sweltering --waiting for electricity to go back on....

Or: join neighbors taking action, Demanding that our reps take Steps that will make a difference? The time of letting giant corporations do whatever they want to the environment to make money: Over --passe. Now: we must control our destiny. Time for sitting around, indifferent or hoping: also Over.

The people in Washington DC --City Hall --City Council: Serve Us --they --ALL serve at OUR pleasure, NOT the other way round. We need to Remind them of that. Each of us: must request a response from representatives--

What will they do --to Reduce carbon emissions
--to improve mass transportation
--and When do we have DASH buses --more bicycle lanes, bicycle racks in neighborhoods and downtown
--to get electric/bio-fuel/solar cars --and rentals available locally
--to get solar panels on apartment buildings and single family dwellings
--about DWP and coal-fired energy
--to see that we go All Green in southern California

Protect the Environment?
OUR representatives can somehow, allow affordable buildings to convert to high-end condos --find the money to purchase cameras to spy on us --parking meters to charge us for using already-paid space. But cameras and meters that make money for the corporations that make the cameras and write the parking tickets: NOT on OUR Agenda. --More condos --cameras --meters --won't help if the planet is fried. WHEN will they STOP wasting Our money? --START working on OUR agenda?

Eric Garcetti, council member for Silver Lake: has participated with the Silver Lake neighbors who have worked to get DASH in Silver Lake. Bureaucrats put Silver Lake on the DASH List: LAST. What difference has he made? Where would Silver Lake be on the List without his participation?

What has the Mayor done: to improve mass transit --get DASH to neighborhoods --REDUCE traffic in Los Angeles? He made campaign promises. When do those happen?

If Janice Hahn, the City Council rep for Los Angeles and San Pedro ports, or the governor behaved like leaders: called on Congress to unite to have ALL US ports go Green --power up with Clean energy, at every port, would the rate of asthma and cancer go down --along with the carbon emissions and toxic waste thrown into the atmosphere?

Find links to Contact the Mayor --Los Angeles City Council members --Washington representatives: in Sidebar.

What ideas do You have for slashing glacier-destroying carbon emissions? How do You think we should prevent 200 threatened species from going extinct in the next 20 years? --HOW do we leave the sort of planet we have --to grandchildren of today's newborns? --Do we owe them --a planet as splendid as we have? Or is our legacy to future generations to be: heat --shriveled plants, vegetables, fruit, grain --food that cannot survive outdoors --everyone fighting for water --that is, for those not already overtaken by rising sea water, hurricanes and flood?

The volunteers have a Plan --others joined them --to plan an event, you can drop into Saturday --find a local event to join here

After Step It Up --Call Congress from November 5th call List: Senate and House of Representatives

Remember The oily boys spent millions on fake scientists, PR people and hacks ---to plant fake and derisive stories in local and national newspapers and on the Internet --for Years. That delayed, confused and muddied public debate. "How could one degree hotter matter" --remember that one? They spent multi-millions more on: our representatives in Congress --on campaign donations, trips, pricey dinners --junkets to exotic destinations to convince them to ignore mounting evidence.

Oily boys don't make fun of stakeholders --or scientists any more. They Ooze and coo and spam TV --with oily messages about 'how Green they are' --how much they "care." They "forget" to mention: THEY invented the term "Green " --as a way to belittle, discount those alarmed at their actions and at the evidence of it.

Now: We ALL are out of time, thanks to them and their pals: auto makers. --Remember GM: ORDERING Recall --Demanding that buyers return --then crushed already-made Electric cars? American auto-makers: Earned the trouble they have now. --Except they put us: in the stew with them.

Now: we have to pressure editors, reporters and representatives --and we have to pool resources and send to those who Are making a difference.

If you think the solution: to broken levies, broken promises and an Administration looking out for the wealthy, the old energy solutions and the old boy network --is Our power, donate to those who are
making it happen --either on-line (secure link) or through snail mail. --Even Gandhi needed funds, give something or a lot. The oily boys do --all the time. --That's how oil could get to $100. a barrel by Christmas and they can pay themselves $400 million bonuses. We Have to pool OUR resources --to take power away from them --take back our Power.

Polar Bears
I've come to dread BBC news stories about melting icecaps --disappearing flowers, plants, insects, birds.... I don't know How to save a polar bear --any better than I know how to stop glaciers from melting. Even if I Knew How: I cannot go to the Other side of the Planet --DO a thing. I hate it and I can't "fix it" --any of it, by myself.

What I can do: send this group $20. or $25. --Sierra Club and numerous other environmental organizations already have. You can send but $10.? --That's $10. more than they have now. --You can send $1,000. --without hurting your budget: then you help All get where we need to go, faster.

Maybe a Good combination: send them a contribution --in someone else's name, for their holiday gift. --Then you will be doing a Green thing, helping, supporting them --save on wasteful packaging -shipping -on some wasteful gift. With every dollar you're thinking of sending remember: the oily boys are sending money, but representatives rarely hear from us, so your dollars will mean more. "Step It Up" --Silver Lake daVine --for sure.

I found out about this organization and this event: by e-mail from VP Al Gore, which only just arrived. --If I had received it earlier: would have posted sooner. --If you cannot squeeze the Planet into your day: at least make a call on Monday --and send them a donation --it is tax deductible. --Both: better than feeling bad about polar bears, avoiding the news --or traveling thousands of miles without skills or tools to help.

It's Not May 1, But Here's a Poll --Silver Lake

lol, Sorry, I'm fond of puns...Okay, what we have here: Maybe the most fun I've had on a blog --and you get to play. Subject: Traffic --Silver Lake daVine remedy?

What do You think is the way to solve traffic we got, the more we're fer Sure gonna get. If you haven't been playing past eight years: several Silver Lake neighbors got together --kept getting together to work --very hard, to get DASH bus system IN Silver Lake community.

Their reward? Los Angeles city bureaucrats deemed the project "so important" they listed Silver Lake: 22nd on the List --as in, when every Other community has DASH, all the equipment/everything every body needs/wants, they will get around to thinking about it. Or: #22 as in Dead Last. So much for hard work.

Remember the person who came round to every park, every place more than two residents were standing --to ask for our vote, and got it --on promises to "represent" us? --What does our rep in City Council think is the priority?

Eric Garcetti: in some magical way, Found the money to purchase 500 brand-spanking new--wait for it--TaDa Parking Meters? How did he do that? Where will he Get the Money --to remove existing obstacles AND Cut 500 sidewalks? How does he intend to Pay: to maintain 500 Additional Meters? Uh, the money --to purchase DASH buses?

Why would Eric Garcetti Want to insert More parking meters into doing-just-fine Silver Lake? WHERE would 500 new meters be inserted? The answers: just maybe linked?

Think about it: You know a resident who would Like to Pay to park --in front of their home? Who Would like people to Pay? Bingo: a person who has a business --wants cars to Move Along, not stay --in front of their shop. Not too friendly, that.... Business owners in Silver Lake: want people to come in to their business --and Pay for the, uh, privilege. Then: promptly get the heck Out of the way --so others can spend in their shop.

So: Exactly WHY can't D.O.T. enforce existing parking restrictions --get Off their bottoms/out of their cars --chalk tires --write ticket on the overly-parked?

WHY do shop-keepers get Eric Garcetti's ear --but far larger number of residents --don't? Hmmm...could it be: shop owners make campaign donations? --Residents, too busy working to pay sky-high rent, Aren't cramming bucks into Garcetti's hope chest?

If You pay taxes: You Already paid for streets --sidewalks --curbs, maintenance. Why should you Pay to rent curb space? If a person can afford it: they will not Be forced to pay to rent a curb --they will pay for off-street parking, pay a driver or a cab to get from place to place. The people who are forced to pay to use curb space: those who can least afford it, usually.

Pay to park at a curb: a Second tax

A Parking ticket: a Third tax

Penalty added to Parking ticket --"fine": a Fourth tax

No money to pay the Parking ticket: penalty added --a Fifth tax

Fairness? MIA --The well-off don't pay any of it.

Can't pay the ticket or the penalties? Those other robber-barons in State legislature: passed a "law" that allows un-reasonable seizure of property --Without due process --no trial Before seizure --in Direct violation of US Constitution. Car gets sold --for the "penalties" they allowed to be slapped on it. Nice. Cool racket they got going. You had it, now they got it --and pocket the profit when it gets sold off for "payment" of penalty. ALL of us should run for elected office --or to the voting booth.

If a parking meter is anchored in front of their residence: Many Silver Lake residents will be screwed. Most apartment buildings: weren't built with garages, and the City had public transportation when most of Silver Lake was built, turn of the century to 1940s. Who knew: corrupt politicians would be seduced by GM's 'suggestion' to rip out public mass transit, in favor of cars, in cities all over the US --all at the same time....

Therefore: those who can Least afford to park --don't have Alternative method to travel to and from work --and if Parking Meters are jammed in front of their home, no place to park a car either.

What will happen --to families that have lived in Silver Lake for decades? Does twenty --thirty --forty years --long before Eric Garcetti "represented" them, count for nothing? Will less-well-off: be forced to move out of Silver Lake?

--Apartment buildings and now-affordable housing --left vulnerable to "condo conversion" developers --who make campaign 'donations'?

In his defense: a Garcetti staffer, for legislative affairs made a promise to another group of hardworking stakeholders, people who spent Dozens of hours collecting signatures --on Petitions, about Parking Meters. The Staffer Promised: If the esteemed rep for Silver Lake called for the D.O.T. Report on Parking Meters, the group would get Notice --heads up --have opportunity to present the hundreds of pages of signatures to that body known as: Los Angeles City Council.

What happened?

There are so many ways one could put it...one Could say Eric Garcetti got distracted --'consumed' with the "need" to put a hotel --in area in "desperate" "need" of a hotel, Hollywood.... Or: Caught on tape, embracing the person who could 'manage' to fill the "need"? Or: Did he get all passionate --wanting, uh, some other job --higher up the food-chain? Did his daddy whisper words of experience? Did his campaign hope chest grow? $150,000 a year plus all expenses paid --suddenly not enough --for his, uh, skills? Ahhh...the mysteries of life....

More Reality: the Staffer --"forgot" to call.... At a time when that august body of 'law'-makers is usually out --Christmas shopping: they Somehow got the Idea --to Call for the D.O.T. Report --on Parking Meters, in Silver Lake --mere days before Christmas, when they are usually on vacation.

Nobody sitting on that body Heard from the Community. --Nobody in the Community KNEW they were Listening to D.O.T. --tell the "City Council" it 'Wasn't' Possible for meter-monsters, paid by an enormous private multi-national corporation, to get off their butts, Get Out of their cars --Enforce existing Parking Restrictions. Gee, how did that happen.

Uh, WHY can't butt-lazy ticket-writers Get Out of Cars --DO The Job they are paid to do? WHY "can't" head of D.O.T. Order them to Do the Job??? If They Did their job: NO NEED for Parking meters. duh

Meter Money

You are in favor of meters --for the money they bring in? Where does the money Go? If Silver Lake had More meters --what could we do with it? Sorry, try again. That august body downtown: sold off the Meter Money Business, quietly --several years ago --to said ginormous multi-national. Corp. Keeps majority of the money, ships tiny remaining fraction to the City's pot. --No local community gets to Keep the money it earns renting curbs.

Still want to help enrich the corporation?

Flash forward: a man, in another congested part of Los Angeles, gets the idea There Must Be a Better Way. The Way? The Way New York --San Francisco --China --India --hundreds of cities round the world get around: pedi-cabs. He solves all Kinds of problems, works on the idea --until he gets it all worked out. He presents the idea to the august body --using Law. That towering inferno of "representatives" deemed his idea --giant nope --naw --'illegal' --not on their watch.

Hmm...then the Geniuses at D.O.T. "decided" they could not slap a permit on a pedi-cab --so they said he could not put pedi-cabs out to help the most congested place this side of Arizona. Oh, it's Okay for San Francisco...well maybe there was no "campaign contribution" attached?

Uh, does D.O.T. force people on bicycles to get a "Permit"???

Ah well...the non-lawyers --who make Laws for Everybody else, even at the Beach, which they DON'T own, and even the air --five feet outside buildings they also DON'T own, won't allow pedi-cabs --"can't" find the money for DASH --common sense or ways to EASE traffic. Can "find" ways: to put a hotel in Hollywood, parking meters in front of homes, convert Affordable housing into over-priced condos and every stupid impediment going --to Thwart what Residents Do Want.

WHO is working for Whom here?

What happened to our "representation"? When does that begin? When does DASH get to Silver Lake? If You come home from long day at work and bumper-car commute --to find Parking Meter planted in front --what will you do --then?

What do You think?
Which way should Silver Lake deal with traffic problems? It's Your turn --have your say --in the Poll, in the Sidebar. You can Vote --until noon Monday. Haven't done a Poll before, not all that sure how the tech part goes, so I'm hoping for good outcome/no break-down.
If it goes wrong somehow: I'll repeat it. If you know any of those who worked on DASH, Petitions or the man who organized Pedi-cab business: e-mail them to pop in and Vote.

I've thought of more Poll subjects, if you want to suggest a topic: post in Comments below.

UPDATE Poll deadline will be extended

These look like good 'catches' don't they...it's lucky to be in Silver Lake daVine... enjoy. If you attend: come back and post a 'review' in Comments --tell us how it was.

NOTE: DWP 'management' earns greater salary than others doing the same job --at other Los Angeles agencies and in other states, yet Los Angeles has, apparently, enough money: to pay DWP employees overtime and people sitting on City Council $150,000 per year --Plus car, gas, perks and staff --but NOT enough to get DASH --in Silver Lake. To go to these exhibits: you will have to walk, bicycle downhill-bus it back, or get into a car --after it's filled with particulate-spewing toxins. Where is DASH? Where is representation: to Get DASH buses in Silver Lake? Where is: Silver Lake Neighborhood Council board members --demand for DASH?

Note: Having a bit of trouble with the puter and starting work on 2008 Election, so I'm a tad behind in posts, but will cetchup (lol)

So Did You DASH It Today?

~Didja~get~on~a~bus~Jack~~Jill? How was it? What did you think of the DASH? Where did you go? What did you do? Did you make it --to the Big Dig of one-day Silver Lake Library? --Who was there? --See any drawings --architect --Friends Of? How was it? --Someone said Mayor V. was out --did you spot him?

Did you stop at Sunset Junction? What was going on there? Did you get any goodies --freebies? --Who participated --which shops did you pop into? Did you Meet Up with pals --family? How many were on the bus trips you made --full --sparse? Stop at Dog Park? Did you have any prob --boarding with the furry family-member? --Over to the Farmer's Market? --Lunch? --Who with? Tell! Tell!

I picked up a tomorrow-snack at Tropical and a table-full of people having coffee: told me they had taken the DASH, took entire round trip --one said he came back to start point --then went east and back. --To 'prove' it he said he 'paid his quarter.' lol, Told him DASH was free --all day, he said he didn't mind 'contributing' --he wants the DASH to come back! Once I was on: Whoa! --Wood-paneled! Never saw a bus dressed in wood before...someone said the buses were "borrowed from West Hollywood." Say, the WeHo's Know how to live. Pret-ty classy! At the same time: kinda cozy, with the wood out-door kind of bench seats. Was DASH you were on like that? Different? How?

Nice people having fun, I never saw before, on the DASH. --Did you have that experience? Even the bus drivers were friendly. It was partly filled when I got on, people joined at every stop, nearly full by the time I departed. Kewl!

One of the women: who worked Hard to get DASH --this far. Thanked her. A man --who worked on the election --who, gosh, had read this Blog! Major kewl. Thanks! Yes, SLNC held an election today, DASH stopped at the polling place. --You could have also. Why didn't I mention that, two weeks ago --at all? Mostly: I'm ticked, at the Board members. Not Enough was done --to reach Entire community --to find candidates --in my opinion. They had all summer.... More on that, some other time, maybe.

A woman got on --without a purse. Everyone was chatting, so I asked --why: She said she got on right near her home, it was her sixth trip of the day --she walked out of her kitchen, leaving dinner to cook, her husband to babysit it. lol, Hiya Christine! V. kewl person. A couple, intently discussing --art --concert --movie choices? Pretty weather --no rotten mean heat, electrical storm, fire --flood --rain --hurricane, tsnumi...bullets... black-outs or shortage. Just fat clouds, plastered in front of pastel blue --above grey-blue Reservoir... on~a~ clear ~Satur-day~afternoon..... The driver asked a neighbor/passenger to dispose of her unwanted soda, and cheerfully obliged. In just a few stops: one could feel Community --neighbors --the boundary of Silver Lake...we all live Here --This spot... Hello --Oh, Hi...we were all --Home...This wedge of the world...the Lucky part... Silver Lake daVine....

So: round the Reservoir I went --to Trader Joe's. --Stopped Right in Front, whoa, Nice. You know: You cannot get to TJ's from here --there is No Bus --364 days a year....

How Goofy is that --entire area around TJ's, in every direction: Business --shops --cafes --markets. What's up with that --which Pea-brain --laid out the regular bus routes --didn't route a bus Into/Around --the necessaries??? --EVERY man --woman --child Has their Own Transport --so what, if short hops, pollute? LA: Needs to Grow Up. I spent nearly entire childhood in San Francisco --traveling the length, breadth of it --because I Could --every three -five minutes --a bus/trolly/street-car/cable car whized by. We don't even have Regular buses over entire main grid, never-mind DASH, sheesh. We Demand DASH --We Demand DASH! Silver Lake MUST Have DASH --Now --THIS Week. I will publish this, then search for links --to addresses we can Cram Full to get DASH Here. Be back with them later...Silver Lake daVine...

NOTE Now It's Your turn: Really wanna know, Your experience of DASH day...leave a Comment...

NOTE I found another new toy --in this blog, it is a "Poll" feature. So: I'll create, figure out How to put up, and write a question...I'm think'n --national election...parking meters...lots of things.... What do you think we should Poll ourselves about? Post'm if you've got'm....Silver Lake daVine...

What CAN You Do?

Unless You:
made Forbes’ “Wealthiest 100” on the planet List
–Or sole person who knows ‘magic weapons’ location US military is ‘hunting’ and entire cache they left un-guarded –Or the Actual “higher authority” Oval Office occupant consults
unlikely YOU can stop war in Iraq. In two generations: people will not be able to see a polar bear, an elephant, a dozen different kinds of birds, a glacier…so –You can save how many from extinction?

We yell at the TV –rant over coffee with friends –fume over inability to Change A Thing, but who wants to join protest rally –Iraq Invasion –Global Pollution, get beaten or arrested by LAPD’s finest, and what good would it accomplish anyway?

Without vast wealth --unique knowledge --supernatural ability: What Can YOU do –about two of the most serious issues going? You can use your power. You Can send a message straight to Washington. YOU can: get on a bus. Don’t laugh.

Neighbors in Silver Lake worked Very Hard, Very Long: to get a DASH bus in the neighborhood. Bureaucrats: rewarded their work by putting SL on the List –at 22nd –to get a bus. –As in: the next millennium, maybe.

People sitting on the Fraud Squad: too busy doing ‘desperately’ needed condo, hotel, maul [sic] deals with developers, funding spy cameras, approving destruction of landmarks and swiping personal freedom, rights to care, help. Bureaucrats, Fraud Squad: if there’s no money in it for them, Pay attention only when there is heat, noise –LOTS of people involved. –Unless: there is a Photo Op in it for them….

YOU can –make a Huge photo op –make ALL Pay Attention –affect pollution coming out of Silver Lake: Ride the Bus September 29. If You –pull in everyone you know to get on the bus that day –buses packed –show bureaucrats: Silver Lake MUST have a DASH –Now.

–Think busses are ‘creepy’? Over 200 species are on “Endangered” list, will be extinct in a few years because of drought, heat –flood –fire –contaminates. –So –don’t want to leave your car parked, even for one day? Creepy will be –a world without creatures, plants, trees.

You already have plans –You will be working –You’re a realtor who has to take clients? Arrange your day with the bus route and times. –Clients, buyers, customers will be Impressed that you care and will see what sort of neighborhood we have.

–You –not on the Bus: don’t bother again trying to convince –“care” about war or about pollution. If You don’t care about either one: Post your address below, in Comments –so we can all avoid you.

But if we Get DASH bus IN Silver Lake and USE it: we will be the Start of Less Oil –Less ‘reason’ to invade oil-holding countries –less pollution thrown into the atmosphere causing planet to heat up/destroying polar bears…glaciers –save species –and Money. –DOING instead of ranting. –Sending message to Washington –inspiring residents all over to demand home-grown solutions/politicians to step Up.

Use YOUR power: Send a Message to the bureaucrats –get on the DASH Bus Sept. 29. –Force them to spend OUR money –Wisely. Link, Email your list. Meet up –on the bus. That’s Silver Lake daVine.

IF you need another reason to USE your power: one day, if you’re lucky, you will be of an age –not able to drive anymore. How do you imagine you will get groceries –go to the park –anywhere, then? Would you like to go out and protest –demand a DASH then? Make the bureaucrats Listen –Now. You CAN Bookmark the Date. You CAN get on the bus!

You cannot change Entire world, but you –ALL neighbors can: make a difference in This One piece of the world. Put your Body where your Mouth is –Saturday September 29, 2007
–it's Free –it's Important –it Affects our Future –in Silver Lake daVine….

See Event details for the day: here or here --if neither opens go to: http://www.silverlakenc.org/ ---> What's New ---> scroll then --->: Silver Lake DASH

See Proposed & September 29 Route: here --can be enlarged

Another way to think of this: There is no bus on Rowena --Silver Lake Bl west to Hyperion --street full of business, shops --you cannot get to Trader Joe's from here.... There is no bus to Bellevue Park....
