Silver Lake ALERT: Transit
As received - Silver Lake daVine: in-box
Sunset Junction Transit Plaza
In past we noted that Eric Garcetti's office had applied to Metro for funds to construct a transit plaza on the Jiffy Lube site in Sunset Junction. We're happy to report that the proposal has cleared the first hurdle and received a go-ahead from Metro staff. The application will be going before the Metro Board in the near future.
Several Years Ago
I went before Silver Lake Neighborhood Council board, and with help from my District then-rep (Robin), proposed an idea for the site: close off through traffic at the 'narrow' end, that feeds into five-way intersection (at Sanborn), create much-needed parking spaces (on three sides/U shape), create a pocket park of the 'wedge' --add bicycle racks --with 'honor parking' NO meters.
Response? Not a single board member asked questions, commented, said word one --or followed up later.
Now: a transit depot.... Whoosh, whoosh. No bike racks, no children 'parked' under greenery... no benches to enjoy, rest, chat... no help added for locals... no staying.... We STILL need green space, bike racks, places to PUT a car --to support local businesses.
Your thoughts?

Silver Lake ALERT: 'Bates' Motel
I pay a Lot of attention, to lots of things, but following (lol): news to me. To you also? Posted as received in Silver Lake daVine in-box:
BATES MOTEL
Silver Lake may be about to lose one of its local urban legends -nightmares. From Northeast Division Senior Lead Officer Al Polehonki (August 11):
"Important meeting information:
The Sunset Pacific Motel, otherwise known as the 'BATES MOTEL' was ordered closed in 2002. Since then it has remained a community eyesore, drawing homeless activities, illegal dumping, and graffiti. I have been notified that The Board of Building and Safety Commission has scheduled a public hearing to determine if the BATES should be demolished.
This location was closed down in large part, thanks to an outpouring of community support over several years.
Please make every effort to attend this meeting in person and share your observations and concerns.
The meeting is scheduled for
September 15th, 2009 at 9:30 AM
201 North Figueroa Street, Room 1050b
(LA 90012)
A second option, should you not be able to attend the meeting would be to generate a letter to
Marsha Brown, President
Board of Building and Safety Commission
and mail it to the above address or fax it to her at (213) 482-0477."
Your thoughts? Do we Have to rip down EVERY old thing? Some Good use? Some bright person/group: could renovate it --for artists --graphic designers --video/doc makers --writers studios? There ARE Recovery Act 2009 funds floating around, as I posted in Silver Lake daVine Calendar: August - IV for Friday
- Seminar Small Business Owner. Restoring/repairing/cleaning up: would generate some jobs --and a Future.

Silver Lake ALERT: Local Crime
(blog host platform has new editor, patience please while I work out location of bells, whistles)
Silver Lake daVine in-box: Burglaries - Silver Lake
Rusty Millar [SLNC Board member] reports on some recent crimes.
August 8th: "A neighbor's home at Descanso/Micheltorena was recently burglarized while they
were out of town, during the day.
I received a call this morning that a home on Dillon St was cleaned out of electrical items/jewelry
and some other belongings just within the last few days. You might let the readership know
that something is going on and they should be careful."
August 12th: "I was just at a community meeting with the SLO's for Rampart. I spoke with
our SLO Justin Stewart about the recent home burglaries in our area -- one on Micheltorena
and one on Dillon. Justin told me the area has been hit with a number of robberies/burglaries
[my bold] -- from Occidental to Micheltorena St .
One person was home when the break in occurred and got into a tussle with one of the burglars,
described as black male(s) in a silver Dodge Charger type of car. Justin is swamped with this activity
in our area. Electronic items, laptops and more are being taken. Let your neighbors know to be
on the watch for things out of the ordinary."
LAPD Bike unit officers have recently been seen patrolling our area. During the summer,
a lot of people leave doors and windows open to catch a breeze -- just remember not to leave
an open invitation to a burglar.
From our April blast:
"MANY BURGLARIES ARE CRIMES OF OPPORTUNITY, WITH SUSPECTS OFTEN
ENTERING HOMES THROUGH UNLOCKED WINDOWS, UNLOCKED SLIDING GLASS DOORS OR UNLOCKED GARAGE DOORS. THE LAPD IS MAKING EVERY EFFORT
TO COMBAT THIS PROBLEM. SINCE COMMUNITY AWARENESS IS THE KEY
TO PREVENTION, WE NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE.
HOME SECURITY TIPS
- LOCK ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS INCLUDING REAR AND GARAGE DOORS
BEFORE LEAVING THE RESIDENCE.
- ENSURE THAT SLIDING GLASS DOORS HAVE STRONG WORKING LOCKS.
- RECORD THE SERIAL NUMBERS OF OUR ELECTRONIC AND COMPUTER
EQUIPMENT AND KEEP THESE IN A SECURE LOCATION
- IF YOU OBSERVE SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY, CONTACT THE POLICE IMMEDIATELY
BY CALLING 911 (EMERGENCY)
OR 877-ASK-LAPD (NON-EMERGENCY).
- OBTAIN A DESCRIPTION OF THE SUSPECT(S)' PHYSICAL APPEARANCE,
ACTIONS AND ANY VEHICLE DESCRIPTIONS INCLUDING LICENSE PLATE NUMBERS.
DO NOT CONFRONT SUSPICIOUS INDIVIDUALS.

Footnote: Despite what Wall St Journal, CNBC, Larry Kudlow, and talking heads say,
US and California financial crisis is NOT "over" "getting better" "sprouting green shoots"
to those who don't have a job anymore, loosing their house/apt.; also don't have enough
to eat, thanks to "governor" Ahrmpit. Each year: federal government offers Food Stamp
supplemental budget to states for disabled, low-income families, elderly. Total number
of states that reject the offer?
One: California
--refuses 2.3 billion bucks every year since Ahnald figured out how to take the Governor seat.
e.g., Disabled on SSI: ONLY in California disallowed to have Food Stamps; he cut the state's
share of aid to Disabled twice this summer, and nearly all medical aid. Dumpster Diving,
charity can handouts and begging OK with "governor" of once-richest state.
Look sharp:
Robbery and burglary isn't going to stop when summer ends/any time soon. Let us hope
Maria Shriver's ball & chain's reign ends before California bankrupt, majority follows Hollywood
--splits for a properly-run state.
