BOOooo...in Silver Lake...

Halloween...in my neighborhood a couple used to convert their house into the scariest place on earth --for a child...front door creaked open loudly --all black inside --then a 'skeleton' put blindfold on each 'guest'...guided through the maze...an 8-year old's hand placed on a plate of 'guts' --cold spaghetti, a plate of 'eyeballs' --tiny meatballs...the rest too scary to recall, blocked from memory....

Since Halloween is for children, what could scare adults?
This wedge of the Internet was going to 'skip' the day --till the story that could frighten anyone appeared...turn on the lights, get good grip on your wallet before reading:

Scary Scarrry Halloween story....

It's Not May 1, But Here's a Poll --Silver Lake

lol, Sorry, I'm fond of puns...Okay, what we have here: Maybe the most fun I've had on a blog --and you get to play. Subject: Traffic --Silver Lake daVine remedy?

What do You think is the way to solve traffic we got, the more we're fer Sure gonna get. If you haven't been playing past eight years: several Silver Lake neighbors got together --kept getting together to work --very hard, to get DASH bus system IN Silver Lake community.

Their reward? Los Angeles city bureaucrats deemed the project "so important" they listed Silver Lake: 22nd on the List --as in, when every Other community has DASH, all the equipment/everything every body needs/wants, they will get around to thinking about it. Or: #22 as in Dead Last. So much for hard work.

Remember the person who came round to every park, every place more than two residents were standing --to ask for our vote, and got it --on promises to "represent" us? --What does our rep in City Council think is the priority?

Eric Garcetti: in some magical way, Found the money to purchase 500 brand-spanking new--wait for it--TaDa Parking Meters? How did he do that? Where will he Get the Money --to remove existing obstacles AND Cut 500 sidewalks? How does he intend to Pay: to maintain 500 Additional Meters? Uh, the money --to purchase DASH buses?

Why would Eric Garcetti Want to insert More parking meters into doing-just-fine Silver Lake? WHERE would 500 new meters be inserted? The answers: just maybe linked?

Think about it: You know a resident who would Like to Pay to park --in front of their home? Who Would like people to Pay? Bingo: a person who has a business --wants cars to Move Along, not stay --in front of their shop. Not too friendly, that.... Business owners in Silver Lake: want people to come in to their business --and Pay for the, uh, privilege. Then: promptly get the heck Out of the way --so others can spend in their shop.

So: Exactly WHY can't D.O.T. enforce existing parking restrictions --get Off their bottoms/out of their cars --chalk tires --write ticket on the overly-parked?

WHY do shop-keepers get Eric Garcetti's ear --but far larger number of residents --don't? Hmmm...could it be: shop owners make campaign donations? --Residents, too busy working to pay sky-high rent, Aren't cramming bucks into Garcetti's hope chest?

If You pay taxes: You Already paid for streets --sidewalks --curbs, maintenance. Why should you Pay to rent curb space? If a person can afford it: they will not Be forced to pay to rent a curb --they will pay for off-street parking, pay a driver or a cab to get from place to place. The people who are forced to pay to use curb space: those who can least afford it, usually.

Pay to park at a curb: a Second tax

A Parking ticket: a Third tax

Penalty added to Parking ticket --"fine": a Fourth tax

No money to pay the Parking ticket: penalty added --a Fifth tax

Fairness? MIA --The well-off don't pay any of it.

Can't pay the ticket or the penalties? Those other robber-barons in State legislature: passed a "law" that allows un-reasonable seizure of property --Without due process --no trial Before seizure --in Direct violation of US Constitution. Car gets sold --for the "penalties" they allowed to be slapped on it. Nice. Cool racket they got going. You had it, now they got it --and pocket the profit when it gets sold off for "payment" of penalty. ALL of us should run for elected office --or to the voting booth.

If a parking meter is anchored in front of their residence: Many Silver Lake residents will be screwed. Most apartment buildings: weren't built with garages, and the City had public transportation when most of Silver Lake was built, turn of the century to 1940s. Who knew: corrupt politicians would be seduced by GM's 'suggestion' to rip out public mass transit, in favor of cars, in cities all over the US --all at the same time....

Therefore: those who can Least afford to park --don't have Alternative method to travel to and from work --and if Parking Meters are jammed in front of their home, no place to park a car either.

What will happen --to families that have lived in Silver Lake for decades? Does twenty --thirty --forty years --long before Eric Garcetti "represented" them, count for nothing? Will less-well-off: be forced to move out of Silver Lake?

--Apartment buildings and now-affordable housing --left vulnerable to "condo conversion" developers --who make campaign 'donations'?

In his defense: a Garcetti staffer, for legislative affairs made a promise to another group of hardworking stakeholders, people who spent Dozens of hours collecting signatures --on Petitions, about Parking Meters. The Staffer Promised: If the esteemed rep for Silver Lake called for the D.O.T. Report on Parking Meters, the group would get Notice --heads up --have opportunity to present the hundreds of pages of signatures to that body known as: Los Angeles City Council.

What happened?

There are so many ways one could put it...one Could say Eric Garcetti got distracted --'consumed' with the "need" to put a hotel --in area in "desperate" "need" of a hotel, Hollywood.... Or: Caught on tape, embracing the person who could 'manage' to fill the "need"? Or: Did he get all passionate --wanting, uh, some other job --higher up the food-chain? Did his daddy whisper words of experience? Did his campaign hope chest grow? $150,000 a year plus all expenses paid --suddenly not enough --for his, uh, skills? Ahhh...the mysteries of life....

More Reality: the Staffer --"forgot" to call.... At a time when that august body of 'law'-makers is usually out --Christmas shopping: they Somehow got the Idea --to Call for the D.O.T. Report --on Parking Meters, in Silver Lake --mere days before Christmas, when they are usually on vacation.

Nobody sitting on that body Heard from the Community. --Nobody in the Community KNEW they were Listening to D.O.T. --tell the "City Council" it 'Wasn't' Possible for meter-monsters, paid by an enormous private multi-national corporation, to get off their butts, Get Out of their cars --Enforce existing Parking Restrictions. Gee, how did that happen.

Uh, WHY can't butt-lazy ticket-writers Get Out of Cars --DO The Job they are paid to do? WHY "can't" head of D.O.T. Order them to Do the Job??? If They Did their job: NO NEED for Parking meters. duh

Meter Money

You are in favor of meters --for the money they bring in? Where does the money Go? If Silver Lake had More meters --what could we do with it? Sorry, try again. That august body downtown: sold off the Meter Money Business, quietly --several years ago --to said ginormous multi-national. Corp. Keeps majority of the money, ships tiny remaining fraction to the City's pot. --No local community gets to Keep the money it earns renting curbs.

Still want to help enrich the corporation?

Flash forward: a man, in another congested part of Los Angeles, gets the idea There Must Be a Better Way. The Way? The Way New York --San Francisco --China --India --hundreds of cities round the world get around: pedi-cabs. He solves all Kinds of problems, works on the idea --until he gets it all worked out. He presents the idea to the august body --using Law. That towering inferno of "representatives" deemed his idea --giant nope --naw --'illegal' --not on their watch.

Hmm...then the Geniuses at D.O.T. "decided" they could not slap a permit on a pedi-cab --so they said he could not put pedi-cabs out to help the most congested place this side of Arizona. Oh, it's Okay for San Francisco...well maybe there was no "campaign contribution" attached?

Uh, does D.O.T. force people on bicycles to get a "Permit"???

Ah well...the non-lawyers --who make Laws for Everybody else, even at the Beach, which they DON'T own, and even the air --five feet outside buildings they also DON'T own, won't allow pedi-cabs --"can't" find the money for DASH --common sense or ways to EASE traffic. Can "find" ways: to put a hotel in Hollywood, parking meters in front of homes, convert Affordable housing into over-priced condos and every stupid impediment going --to Thwart what Residents Do Want.

WHO is working for Whom here?

What happened to our "representation"? When does that begin? When does DASH get to Silver Lake? If You come home from long day at work and bumper-car commute --to find Parking Meter planted in front --what will you do --then?

What do You think?
Which way should Silver Lake deal with traffic problems? It's Your turn --have your say --in the Poll, in the Sidebar. You can Vote --until noon Monday. Haven't done a Poll before, not all that sure how the tech part goes, so I'm hoping for good outcome/no break-down.
If it goes wrong somehow: I'll repeat it. If you know any of those who worked on DASH, Petitions or the man who organized Pedi-cab business: e-mail them to pop in and Vote.

I've thought of more Poll subjects, if you want to suggest a topic: post in Comments below.

UPDATE Poll deadline will be extended

--Are you a parent, but working Saturday? This is the kind of day: that matters to children; take a personal day and go; if you aren't a parent: go anyway --Laurel & Hardy the best; pass this on to a neighbor, everyone you know who is, this event couldn't happen anywhere else in the world but Silver Lake

Mad as Hell --Not Gonna Take it Anymore? lol, If you've ever said that --but don't know where it came from:
10:00 PM Catch the Saturday Night movie "Network" on KCET.
Willliam Holden -as a TV exec., who can only stand and watch while his life and the industry comes apart. Movies weren't the same after this one, life portrayed As Is. --Would have been reflected to Americans all along if that tiny do-gooder Preacher Hayes, and his extorting cronies, hadn't put his foot on the throat of writers, directors, studio heads --creativity, in 1930s, the "Moral" arbiter of what Mr. and Mrs. American could, could not see...while they counted their pay-offs in church offices.... Oscars for: Peter Finch, Faye Dunaway, Beatrice Straight and writer Paddy Chayefsky. With Holden: Robert Duvall, Ned Beatty, Wesley Addy, William Prince. Khan: Arthur Burghardt. Unfortunately no more from Chayefsky, who died shortly before the movie debuted or was it just after the Oscars, anyway this his last.

UPDATE Did you catch "Network" Saturday night? Though I remember much of it, I'd forgotten how good it was; that it projected, correctly, TV industry future, "reality" & "news" trash, how much worse off viewers would be from greed of networks.... I hope many others saw it, especially college-age and those who have since become US citizens. It's one of those that is part of American culture, our 'common ground' --like knowing who Groucho Marx was....
CORRECTION Memory tricks I was sure it was the writer who died, then I remembered I saw Paddy Chayefsky at the Beverly Hills Hotel the day of the news: Peter Finch died suddenly --and got an Oscar nomination. The Academy voted for him anyway: Finch received an Academy Award for his part in "Network" --awarded posthumously, and without mega-buck industry ads.
I miss William Holden. To turn on TV --see tatooed studded little bubble-heads --shoved in to "News" --minus talent, brains, underwear, anything worthwhile, is to miss --regret the loss even more of the superb actors and reporters and network people who had judgement, depth, talent, class. --And to turn OFF 'local' --network "news" --quickly. Why do "stockholders" matter more than Informing --journalistic ethics, standards? Maybe when it collapses --nothing left to pay off stockholders: they will all wise up.

~31~ Wednesday
9:30 AM → 11:30 AM Yoga
Class designed for 50+ crowd. Taught by Susan Quon, $4 fee per session.

So What Will You Do --Silver Lake Emergency?

You Know it's coming...

Right now --from Malibu beach to the canyons --Santa Barbara to million-dollar estates in Scrips Ranch --resorts in the woods but unusually at the top --to arid inland horse country: over seven areas on fire, even where it's humid, whipped by fierce Santa Anas that snapped power lines --and sick cuckoos, who may have set more. --Fire --feeding on drought-dry trees, brush --homes.

Some: know all about fire --they've seen this movie before, know what to do --they are ready.

Some surrounded by flaming trees --blocked from using either street to exit --escape, don't know what to do, now. What would you do? What about furry members of the family...photos, underwear... groceries...important papers....

Southern California: on a different track than Northern California. We get a Major earthquake about every 150 years. We: way 'over-do.'
It is coming...you know it... you've lived through a few semi-serious quakes, right?

--October 1, 1987? Living in Los Feliz...just made coffee --holding French Press when it hit, grabbed the edge of the sink with the other hand, held on.

When it stopped --pot down --ran to the next room: saw the vase --on the edge --so close: if I merely blew on it, would have gone over. Swept it off the dresser --onto the bed, threw doubled covers over it --dashed --but only got to the doorway --as #3 struck. Held onto the door jamb, kept holding on --till it knocked me down; stayed on the floor, a long time, it seemed, but: not long enough, rose slowly, headed back to the kitchen --as #4 tossed me up against the counter, again --not exactly a Good spot: held on for up-close & personal view --as things on shelves, in cupboards --proved gravity still existed. As I dodged, ducked: vowed to move Out --of California.

Then: I was fairly certain if I got into my car, headed to the office --street would split open, swallow me, never seen again....

But: I was Still here --January 17, 1994...were you? When it was over: every single thing --in a Huge pile --in Each room.... As I burrowed under the covers, days -nights, the question was: was I hungry enough --to climb Over the piles to get to the kitchen.... Usually: the answer was 'nope.'

But I way wasn't alone. The 6.2 Northridge quake, so bad, did so much wide-spread damage: waiters played cards in dining rooms, of fine restaurants, while long lines formed --at drive-through windows of junk food houses. Nobody wanted to get out of their car, sit inside, long enough even for a cheap poor quality meal.

People who had job, home, car --a nice life: suddenly didn't have any of those --or plates, electricity, gas, pans, working fridge --way to make a meal --or get gasoline out of non-working pumps... they also stood --in line, at the park, heard Red Cross worker say: 'sorry, we ran out of soup, an hour ago, can't help....'

When the shaking stops, your hands, not the house: reality creeps back. Mid-west: has tornadoes. South: tornadoes with rain --hurricanes. Northwest: torrential rain, flooding. The North, New England, Up-state New York: human-swallowing snow drifts. No Such Thing: Perfect Place.

Took two weeks to find my slippers. Now: Never get into bed --without slippers directly under the bed --flashlight Bedside. I had climbed through the rubble in the dark, to get outside to the car radio: my feet were cut, bleeding, from embedded glass --I didn't notice for hours, till the sun came up.... Now: a solar radio.

If it isn't one thing --fire --quake --a really bad driver plowing into your home: it's Another, as Gilda Radner used to say. So the thing is: How to Deal with it. "Nevermind" won't cut it....

Silver Lake: fault line runs through it...downtown...to the Valley.... Ready --or blocked? Better to Learn what to Do, Before it happens. Silver Lake daVine way --better than cowering under the covers, hungry:

Zero Waste??? EVENT: Saturday October 20

Who knew: Silver Lake community could have zero waste --because City of Los Angeles working on zero tolerance --for garbage --for twenty years. There is a see-about-it Saturday October 20, 2007 --sounds daVine...Well If I'da known: I'da posted sooner.

It's probably too late to RSVP or to have lunch, but you could still get free parking and ear-full, probably. I am very curious about the "environmentally friendly service providers" --If you attend: come back and post a review, tell us the who/what --which City people, Eric Garcetti, etc. attend --if they actually stayed, or just photo-op. [Highlights mine.]

'Lights Out' EVENT --Saturday October 20, 2007

So did you tell friends --neighbors --Dog Park pals --your local connections: remind it's 'Lights Out' --all over Los Angeles, tomorrow night from 8 PM to 9 PM? Did you remember to tell people at work, those for your household, your children, groomers, pool man and such?

Everyone in Los Angeles can participate --then go outside and Look --at the stars! If you have restaurant plans: eat early --or put off, till after 9 PM. It's not likely any restaurant will participate, at least, not in this country! There is a restaurant, in Europe, I think, that offers 'dining' in the dark --in the Total dark --zero light. Way goofy.

Turning off the lights, computer, appliances, for an hour, will make an impression --on children --on you, perhaps more empathy with those living in Iraq, Afghanistan --outside the Green Zone bubble, that is. Iraqis: without electricity all over Iraq, still not fixed....

While you're out doing errands: pick up a power strip, for all electrical appliances. You do know: Off of an appliance isn't really off. To actually shut off the current going into the plug --to really save, money and electricity, plug everything into power strips, then shut off the strip, with just one simple button push. Power strip: a portable electrical socket, except much easier to use than the fixed socket in the wall. Just don't load up the power strip with additional extension cords!

Power strip: will also prevent cord to electrical coffee-maker from ever over-heating, burning down your home --one of the most common causes of residential structure fire.

It was so pretty today, if the weather stays, should be beautiful night, at least for an hour. It's not too late: to tell the neighbors, who tell theirs --then the whole block --whole Silver Lake community can enjoy...an Hour under the stars...daVine!

These look like good 'catches' don't they...it's lucky to be in Silver Lake daVine... enjoy. If you attend: come back and post a 'review' in Comments --tell us how it was.

NOTE: DWP 'management' earns greater salary than others doing the same job --at other Los Angeles agencies and in other states, yet Los Angeles has, apparently, enough money: to pay DWP employees overtime and people sitting on City Council $150,000 per year --Plus car, gas, perks and staff --but NOT enough to get DASH --in Silver Lake. To go to these exhibits: you will have to walk, bicycle downhill-bus it back, or get into a car --after it's filled with particulate-spewing toxins. Where is DASH? Where is representation: to Get DASH buses in Silver Lake? Where is: Silver Lake Neighborhood Council board members --demand for DASH?

Few things make one squirm more --Or the holidays more unpleasant...Spend lavish --Big Deal --risk looking 'cheap' --go into debt --which way? You cannot Possibly go 'wrong': heading to the River. lol, no, don't jump! Choose a Membership to Friends of the Los Angeles River. One year membership begins at $25, goes up to $500, all levels include a tangible to give as well. I double-dare anyone to whine: about helping to free/clean Los Angeles River. It is the Right size, color, length, shape --and: it cannot be returned! No-loose situation. (There is a link to their site in the Sidebar)

The Made gift means much more. My father: used to bring out a cherished bottle of liquor made and sent by monks he knew, at the end of holiday dinners. It meant an enormous amount to him. Nuns in France, who made cheese, did the same, which had the same effect.

You do NOT hafta get into a Big financial hole. It is only October. You can make List of Must Gives, What to Make for each, assemble the parts --while out doing other trips, over the next two months.

For moi: I don't like cliches, so I used to send cards out at Thanksgiving, that being one of my two favorite holidays and I think everyone has lots piled up for Gratitude. But being as busy as anyone, that tradition wafted away. Then throughout '90s I started a new one.

During the year: I would find excellent things, unique, funny or special in some way. I assembled List of them and sent that out every year, instead of cards, so others could enjoy. I decided this year: I will send my List --of Goodies --to You, if you would like to have.

The List will include: things just Good.

I am searching for a way/widget, tool, whatever, so you could send your e-mail address --securely. In case you don't know: I am tech semi-illiterate! I could post MY e-mail address, but then it would appear: E-v-e-r-y where! No, thanks. So I'm a-search'n, for a better way. When I find, test, works, I'll let you know.

Of course, it IS possible: nobody will want List of Goodies, so secure e-mail system would be irrelevant...but I think I'll go with: Optimism!

So: see what's in the Certified Farmer's Markets, find best place to purchase blocks, Tinker Toys...make a Plan, so whatever comes, you can enjoy January as much as the holidays ...that would be Silver Lake daVine.... Okay, exhale....

Nobel Peace Prize: Planet Wins! Oily Boys Loose!

Members of the Nobel Peace Prize committee, appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, announced the Peace Prize this year will be awarded jointly to: former US Vice President Al Gore and to United Nations Climate Change Panel.

Could there be a more de-lish way: to put the planet first --on front of every newspaper, every country's government agenda, every home --everyone's thoughts --and stick it 'in the eye' of the oily boys?

The oily boys and their cousins --coal-producers and those who lust in their 'hearts' for nukes, et al: for Years they have paid toadies to spread trash --fake data --put-downs --phony arguments in newspaper stories and on the Internet. You don't recall? How about: "how could just one degree hotter matter, giggle giggle" --heard that one --from the local boob on the local boob-tube news? They roll out lavish parties, perks, 'conferences' in exotic all-expense-paid locations --for certain media people and members of Congress, the friendly ones. You don't know who they are? They helped get the current Oval Office Occupant lobbed into the chair.

You would know their names...

The President of Vice --had a meeting with 180 of the oily boys network immediately after his boss got sling-shotted into the White House. Afterwards: The Dick whacked a fat rubber stamp on the Minutes of those meetings --"Classified" --then: he ran outta time --to meet with even One environmentalist, lobbyist, Sierra Club rep or former EPA staffer on the Other side of 'Environment' topic. The Dick be a Busy Bee.

Before the President of Vice found time to meet with the oily old boys network: the Nation's Parks were reserved for the nation --to enjoy --Un-touched, un-molested, protected. After: oily boys needed spittoons for all the saliva --thinking --plotting what to Do with Permission --to Get at all those resources...just sitting there, uh, un-used.

Soon enough: mercury, leached from suddenly UN-regulated coal-plants, ran into waterways --and into fish. --It was "okay" on days it rained --then, oops, on days when it didn't. Therefore: They went to work --on doctors, who put out un-pleasant pieces on pregnant women stop eating fish. Then, gee, suddenly "okay" to eat fish, even if it contains mercury. Oh well.
Maybe just the top --sides --bottom --big --little fish...gosh that's confusing.

Tops of mountains: 'magically' got blown off --in some of the most beautiful parts of the US, exposing easy Pickens. People below those mountains --who suddenly had no potable water, did have loads of heavy metals --disease, cancer and death. Well, everybody has to 'carry' their weight in the fight --to enrich the rich and powerful and well-connected, in the 'war' for energy. How many mountain tops: get blown off to put up windmills? Oh well.

Did you know: on the eve of his second "election" --paper --typed, stacked, ready --for after his "election"? Paper: 38,000 mining, drilling contracts --signed, ready to go --to the favored few, who ‘helped.’ Why were the contracts ready --How did the Occupant know he would get a second term? That is how he came to be known, by this author, as the "occupant.” The first election: Popular vote went to Al Gore, but no-longer supreme court manuevered, as pay-back to their patrons.

Second time: he "received" more "votes" --than registered voters, in seven states. Votes --for somebody else --were changed, in the electronic "vote" machines, and pals --who were just 'sure' some voters made, uh 'mistake.' So they 'corrected' the "mistake.” Except US Census Bureau audit report and GAO Report to Congress: detailed how the pals, oops, corrected more votes than humans who voted. Did you hear any outrage --from Congress? Me either. Oh well.

Nuke-lovers --stuck in back of the pack --still playing tag, haven't been as successful. Not even The Dick has arms that long. Duh, Nobody Can Answer the question: Where does the waste/spent rods go? When he was campaigning, the first time, the Occupant: went to Nevada and Swore to residents he would not ship nuclear waste to Nevada. I knew someone who was in the packed Las Vegas hall, heard him promise: "Give me your vote, I will not ship nuclear waste to Nevada.”

Within two years after no-longer supreme court inserted him: the Occupant signed authorization --spent nuclear rods shipped to Nevada. --It goes through Other states to get there. Oh well. All those people who heard him promise: will be dead by the time that waste doesn't leak, isn't harmful anymore --in 10,000 years, so they won't be helping Republicans, so Republicans don't care about Nevada or nuclear waste or the people who live near dumpsite. Oh well.
The nuke network has company at the back of the line --windmill and solar energy producers --still waiting for a First Meeting with the 'administration.'

So now that the environment is front and center and the administration is impotent: what could we do here --in Silver Lake --that could lead --change the direction and the destruction, locally? Your thoughts?

How about the Jacaranda trees planted on Silver Lake Blvd: supposing we plant more --on the entire boundary of Silver Lake? Both sides of the street...then we would have more trees and a marker --if someone wanted to know 'where' they were, they could know from the line of trees--inside/outside Silver Lake--and everyone would have something beautiful to see when they bloom, birds: more places to call home...everyone: shade...'green' air conditioner....

I posed that idea to Silver Lake Neighborhood Council. Still waiting on reply, four --or is it five, years later.

Or How About: we make a concerted effort to get bicycle rack installed --in all five of the business areas, reservoir, schools throughout Silver Lake? We could lobby City Hall to get more lines painted for bicycle path. Bicycles: take up less space than cars --easier access to local businesses.

It Would be Smart: to Get DASH here...Instead of parking meters. DASH would decrease need to use car for short trips, decrease traffic, decrease pollutants thrown into the atmosphere. EASE congestion to get to local shops, cafes, businesses. Gee, wonder why our reps don't think that is important....
They did not have a prob: making smoking on the Beach illegal --even though, duh, No cops available to do Anything about it, "law" un-enforceable and illegal, no money and, duh, City Council don't Own the beach. Duh. Oh well.

City Council IS in charge of our streets --maintenance, traffic, pot holes. If Silver Lake had DASH: less stress, less expense, less traffic. You can find links to contact City Hall, City Council and both people supposed to rep Silver Lake: in the Sidebar.

I have more ideas...I would LUV to see plastic bags and bottles: banned from all stores in the community.

Could Silver Lake: build a wind farm --and get off electricity grid? We got some pretty tall mountains around here....

How about lobbying City Council to fork over money or put up a bond: to get solar panels on every building? Why not? Really: why couldn't we?

What do you think Silver Lake Could do --should do as a community to protect the environment, stop the pollution?

Post in Comment, below. Send your ideas to Silver Lake Neighborhood Council. Maybe they will listen. Find their link: in the Sidebar. If you get a reply: come back and post it.

The Peace Prize will be awarded on December 10, Nobel's birthday. What could we get done --started, by then, to make Silver Lake even more daVine...?

Talk to neighbors. Are you a parent? Ask-- your children, at dinner tonight, what they think would be good community project. Don’t ask, don’t write/demand anyone do anything? Don’t complain: when environment is layered in toxins –in your lifetime

Un-peachy Georgia Time --Coming to Los Angeles?

People are scared. The people who manage, measure, predict say: Georgia could run out of water --in twelve months. Will that happen here --in California --in Silver Lake?

The sole reason Los Angeles thrived --then brought land speculators, followed by movie industry, which shot movies and built estates all around Silver Lake, Griffith Park and the area: water. --Water diverted/stolen from other places by people like Mullholand and engineers and dam builders. Without water: who could live here?

The people who sit in Los Angeles City Council chambers "cannot" find the money for DASH or for "1,000 more police officers" –as they ponder which real estate deals to approve, which courtyard buildings can be converted to 'desperately-needed' luxury condos, which landmarks are OK to destroy, over-paid DWP 'managers' to get salary raise –sock residents with another raise...while pipes burst, everywhere –and shocked –shocked, do you hear, their campaign coffers –contain laundered money. Duh. Imported and home-grown gang members OWN whole sections of Los Angeles... a few Dozen police attacked media members and mostly silently marching immigrant families, but just "six" will be charged –as Chief of Police whines about lack of money –for terrorism –and continues to fly –outta town. Silver Lake's Neighborhood Council just had an election –decided it's OK for a 14-year old to join them to decide Silver Lake's agenda, unknowing indifferent what stakeholders want –or even that less than half a per cent voted.

What, Precisely, will Any of them DO: if we are out of water?

Georgia –isn't waiting: they are making Plans on restaurants –manufacturing plants –business –on showers, dish washing, drinking –on water rationing
Now.

If we run out of water Here: what will you Do? Wait to see?

When I go out walking in my neighborhood, I often pass a house that usually has the sprinklers on, but no visible human. Recently I saw the owner, sitting in a wheelchair. I knew that he could not see over the front wall from his porch, so I told him: the sprinklers were watering the sidewalk. His response? He told me: to mind my own business. I told him: I was.

Wasting water: will become Everyone's business. No? If your household has used up the week's quota –will you stand and watch, silently, as a neighbor dumps theirs –into the ground –to keep thirsty grass green? Your definition of "terrorist" –then?

Wait and see –why? –Wait for? If you have grass: pull it out –now. –Replace –with native ground cover or plants –with edible plants –crushed rock, natural shale or stones.

We Can replace –corrupt incompetent City Council (–that's how they got the name: Fraud Squad) members –planet-harmful fuel in cars –dumb bureaucrats and administrators. Though you, Tiger Woods and several hundred of his enablers may be indifferent, now, Nothing can replace: Water.

Look at the news on people in Darfur –all over Africa, China, India. Indian farmers go off to tend the crops, but many don't return: they are killing themselves, unable to face –no way to feed their family, with shriveled dead crops. Already: the price of wheat is climbing –all over the world.

Without Water: there is no Here here. Nobody will need to worry about terrorists in Los Angeles. Fraud Squad won’t need to fret –over gangs –shoveling more parking meters –which developers to reward –their perks, $150,000 salary. There will be ocean –mountains –fabulous real estate prices –ANY house, for any buyers.... Silver Lake will cease to be daVine…cease to be.

Pull out that grass. You do not need lawn, you cannot survive without water. Let the saving begin –before Fraud Squad does to water what they’ve done to countless once-affordable buildings and pulls their kind of 'solutions.'

You doubt they would be that dumb?
I recount the story of Silver Lake reservoir: one day a man out walking on the path beside, stopped and asked a DWP worker what was going to happen to the reservoir. The worker shrugged and said: "we're (DWP) done with it; we'll drain it, run the water through underground pipes, fill the reservoir with concrete and leave." That man: got on the phone –alerted neighbors, community –his District and Sacramento reps –worked, hard, eventually for three years to prevent DWP from dumping concrete. –Beautiful reservoir survives, in spite of arrogant once-indifferent DWP. LA City Council? They were, uh, busy, till the cameras appeared.

By-pass Operation
I am not in charge of the planet. You do not control the world. I can hurl this 'pebble.' You: can change wasteful useless lawn under your control –into a positive. You and your neighbors together: can change entire block. Publicity doing That: could ripple round the world.... By-pass the indifferent, the incompetent, the camera-loving, the useless, the silent –those with their own agenda. Get busy, seeing what you –Silver Lake neighbors Can Do, before Silver Lake gets un-peachy....

Silver Lake: ALERT! Traffic Prob ---Broken Main

Today: Saturday October 6, 2007
If you are about to go out: AVOID Sunset --all around Parkman - Silver Lake Blvd.

Today: two water mains broke --many buildings on both sides of Sunset are affected --don't have water. DWP is working on the problem so Traffic is backed up for blocks --north, south, east, west. Around 6 PM: I talked to a DWP worker who was checking electrical cable. He said:

Water to all affected properties: should be restored in about three hours.
Breaks: DWP crews are on Sunset - s/e side of Parkman
That is why nearby hydrants are: open - gushing
Avoid entire area --traffic is a mess, very slow; buses, etc., all directed to alternate routes; several bus lines re-routed South off Sunset, down Silver Lake Bl. Let your neighbors know --they can't get there from here!

October 20: Nightlight

An idea that charmed me: Los Angeles is going to have an ‘outage.’ --People all over LA county: encouraged to Turn Off the lights --for one hour, October 20, 2007, 8 PM to 9 PM. It is an idea borrowed from Australia, grabbed by San Francisco --adopted by Los Angeles.

Intention: By going dark for an hour, residents will have visual impact of 'no artificial light.’ Organizers hope that encourages all to: acquire compact fluorescent light bulbs; Think/Use less electricity; stop wasting. Turn off what not using --reduce --temporarily, emissions thrown into the atmosphere. --Saw the story over the week-end. Well done. I liked it.

That is how it started, with me. Then as I checked back, each time: more comments added to the TIMES story. Holy Cow! Some people went Bonkers over the idea. Some: livid. Some see the activity as "indoctrination" --by big government --to control people. Whew. Some posted: 'don't believe humans Are having an effect on climate' --isn't scientific consensus' –they resent getting marginalized, for not 'going along' --whole idea is "Marxist." lol....

One of the most interesting comments: 'the electricity has already been produced; along with carbon; not using will have NO effect on the planet.'

--If I think this is a good idea --why say the flip side? --Why post the negatives?

Few reasons: raised by a parent in each political party; one undisciplined, freewheeling, didn't think ahead; one conservative, rigid, looked at next moves while focused on current. = I’m cursed with seeing Both sides --of every thing.... Second: some comments, by the less-rabid, were fascinating; made good points.

Third one of The Most riveting programs I've ever seen: "Dimming of the Sun" on PBS. Saw it twice (re-run recently), you can also, on PBS website. It shows the progression of a few scientists, different parts of the world, who didn't know each other, each discovering something they had never seen, didn't exist in science; unexplainable --at first. Bottom line: it makes the petty bureaucrats of Beverly Hills and Calabasas: LOOK as Stupid as they ARE --"enacting" laws on tobacco use --when THEY cannot Enforce a contract on the Atmosphere, --they don't OWN it --tobacco, lack of: only feeds the neurotic. The True thing to change/ deal with / matters: contrails --of airplanes. --Something humans CAN do to alter the changes in the atmosphere.

Does the activity of Mankind --pollution we create --affect the Planet? I say: Yes.

Does Pollution --affect the Climate? I have changed my mind about that --I am not Certain. I do know: dumping toxins on land --into waterways, oceans --kills. Why wouldn't it be true of throwing toxins into the atmosphere?

Either way: CAN it hurt --to turn Off the lights --for an hour? October 20, 2007...should make Silver Lake daVine.... E-mail this to family, friends, your list. --If enough neighbors turn out their lights, then go outside and have a peek --we SHOULD be able to see: stars! Not the neurotic kind, either! The way semi-arid Los Angeles used to be --nightlights all over the 'umbrella,' Way kewl.

I encourage you to read the LA TIMES story, quickly --click on the now-few hundred comments (--only a few pages when I first read it.) --TIMES has a nasty habit of "Archiving" stories --fast, and prevent reading, so read now, it will probably be gone later.

On the other link: you can sign up, participate, receive future notices, by the people who came together to make this happen.

There is going to be a US "Lights Out" in March, next year. Now if we could just get all the business people in those downtown towers to participate --all year, that would save a LOT of electricity. I have never understood WHY all those lights are left on, every office, every floor, all night long.

SLNC Election Results: 'Landslide' for Region #3

In case you missed the news --nobody bothered to tell you there was an election --for Silver Lake Neighborhood Council, there was. Who got elected to represent Region #3? The 'land' slid --into the polling booth: 18 people voted for ~TaDa --the only candidate running.

Who will be reping the region? --The 18 voters? Hmmm...Good Questions.... But If the newly-elected member shows up for Meetings: she could be arrested. The 18 voters? Well probably: mommy, daddy, counsins... maybe aunts, fer sure grandma...? The New Board member: can only show up --if homework --book reports --studying is all done. --If mommy or daddy: feels like driving her --nobody stops them --for violating Curfew laws. New board member? Age: 14. Yup.

Whole blocks --filled with adults in Region #3, gonna have a 14-year old 'helping.' Can ya picture it? Rampart Station Captain...explaining The Real World, answering her questions.... Hey, that's Some Job "Outreach" committee is doin, doncha think? How About those bi-laws --that Actually permit a 14-year old to stand....

Some language isn't permitted, here... so I'll just leave with this advice:
If You live in Region #3 don't be sending late-night e-mails, ya know, past 9 PM. Board member will be like sleep'n. --If she hasn't been arrested for violating curfew. Oh well.

Since SLNC: has so little respect for the region south of Sunset, I can't be bothered --to post any other results. I will say: there is a five-day holding pattern --to challenge Election Results. And: of the 48,000 residents (--I think) in Silver Lake, total who voted? Less than 1% --500. I'm not gonna link them here, I can't be bothered. Way NOT a Silver Lake daVine election.... THIS should make king of the Fraud Squad Very Very Happy....
